The Stone Gatehouse

An enchanting and historic NYC property

This story-book home situated on a lush and enchanting property will leave you wondering -

Is this really New York City?

This charming and impeccably restored circa 1830 home originally served as the gatehouse to the Kissel Estate. The original stone mansion and its' other outbuildings no longer exist having suffered the cruel fate of the wrecking ball in the early 1900's. Colonial Revival homes were built on the subdivided property in the 1930's.

Appreciated for its handsome architectural characteristics and a magical ability to transport you back in time, the Stone Gatehouse is a much beloved historic property located in Randall Manor on Staten Island's North Shore - just a few blocks from the Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Gardens.

Diamond-paned windows, old stone walls, lattice work, meandering slate and brick paths, unique outbuildings and a gently babbling brook provide an escape from the hustle-and-bustle of everyday life.

When it is necessary to return to reality - and back to work - the commute is inexpensive and painless. There is excellent public transportation with the S44 bus on the corner, which - in just a few minutes -will deliver you to the the Staten Island Ferry.

Read, meditate, enjoy the fantastic view, or maybe doze during the 25-minute free ferry ride into Lower Manhattan.

Then return home after a long day at work to an enchanting haven: serene and green. This is a great place to decompress - just sit in the gazebo listening to the brook and sounds of nature. You can bird-watch....

 and just RELAX!

The more adventurous may be tempted to explore the water's path, which flows out of view around the curving wall.

Off it goes through the neighbor's yard!

And eventually out to the Kill Van Kull and into New York Harbor!

The driveway is accessible from the side of the house. Drive over the wooden bridge...

And onto the brick pavement to the gable-roofed historic garage.

The garden cottage is a light-filled space perfect for a home office, artist's studio, workshop or children's playhouse.

Windows on all four sides of the cottage overlook the yard...

Room for double file cabinets and more....

Slate floors with radiant heat and an in the wall air conditioning/heat unit.

Seven (7) fanciful hutches are connected via tunnels, which accommodate the most active cats or rabbits. They will have hours of safe and exciting play in the fresh air.

One of the tunnels leads to the climate controlled garden cottage .

There is a lot of space for the critters to explore!

A vintage storage shed and a dog run sit side-by-side under a canopy of trees.

The fully fenced yard provides exceptional privacy.  The large property has majestic trees and lots of greenery.

Now it is time to go inside the house!

The screened porch is an ideal spot for weekend brunches. The sunroom - in the background - can also be used as a bedroom. But let's start at the front of the house...

The Dutch traditionally built covered porches or porticoes at the house entrance. Benches on either side of the door welcome guests. This handsome door surround has leaded glass sidelights with lower wood panels and is capped with a glazed Georgian fanlight.

Enter into a spacious and elegant center hall.

All of the first floor rooms have French doors and are directly off of the center hall.

As you enter the home, the living room is on your right through double French doors.

 Beautiful parquet floors ..... and very spacious -  measuring 25' X 14'.

Built-in bookcases and a wood burning fireplace with a Colonial Revival mantel....

There is plenty of room for a piano.....

Marble windowsills that are 18" deep...

Great for plants and for displaying art!

If you go out the Dutch door there is a brick path leading to the side gate through a vine-draped pergola that has seating.

This side entrance has a gabled portico supported by decorative brackets, a small patio, benches and lattice for the climbing vines and roses.

Let's go back in the house...

And over to the dining room.

The dining room has a built-in glass fronted corner cabinet, parquet floors.... and two exposures.

There are unusual concave plaster cornice moldings in the formal rooms and hallway, decorative push button light switches... and an ornate plaster ceiling medallion.

A swinging door leads from the dining room to the kitchen....

Custom maple cabinetry, granite and butcher block bullnose countertops, stainless steel appliances, decorative tile backsplash, slate floor with radiant heat on a separate zone.

Viking commercial oven, Kitchen Aid side-by-side refrigerator, Bosch dishwasher, Marvel wine refrigerator, under-counter lighting and display lighting in top cabinets, extra-deep stainless sink.....

Floor-to-ceiling cabinetry reminiscent of a vintage "Butler's Pantry" with glass fronted doors, decorative cornice and wood wainscot backsplash.

The extra tall kitchen back door has handsome sidelights and ......

opens to a slate patio, which is a convenient place for the barbecue grill.....

 Lots of nice details.....

The amply proportioned rooms, numerous windows, glass doors and smart floor plan makes for a bright and beautiful space.

The sunroom leads to the screened porch.

And now we go upstairs to the 2nd Floor......

To an over-sized bedroom with four closets...

... including a closet dedicated exclusively to shoes (for the Imelda Marcos wannabe) .......

And triple exposure diamond-paned wooden casement windows. These historic windows are true divided light and irreplaceable.

 Now to the next bedroom......

 Just across the hall...

This is the second master bedroom (yes, there are two), which is just as large as the first measuring 25' X 14'...

With views from three exposures. The sound of the babbling brook provides a nightly lullaby.....

There are three oversized closets in this room....

and lots of closet space and storage throughout the house.....

Now to the last bedroom.....

The blue room feels as if it is suspended in the treetops. Its seven double-hung windows look out over the backyard...

It has a built-in chest of drawers, a desk and bookshelves.

Light filled and airy...with dimensions of 12' X 11' but appearing so much larger.

And now over to the bathroom....

An elegant and exceptionally well-designed bathroom featuring wood cathedral ceilings, exposed stone walls, a dual head rotating fan (very cool - figuratively and literally).

The extra-deep soaking tub is on ball and claw feet. High-end fixtures (and faucets that can be found at The Plaza), reproduction crazed subway wall tile with decorative banding and nooks, in-floor radiant heat on its' own zone....

A large glass enclosed walk-in shower with exposed thermostatic shower and sunflower shower head,  hexagon floor tiles of Carrera marble with border...

A large closet for your towels and toiletries....

And into the hallway...

where there is a wall of closets that will meet the storage needs of the biggest clotheshorse.... A hatch opens to the attic for additional storage.

 Now back down stairs.....

To the basement....

through the door under the stairs.....

Watch your head, there's a couple of low beams!

Very clean and spacious washer/dryer and "doggie bath tub" area.

The red room where teenagers can blast music, play video games, punch the heavy bag and watch television without distressing the adults.

Go Yankees! (This comment distresses my daughter who is a Mets fan.)

Fully-tiled corner shower....

and black and white tile floor.....

 Lots of space...

A hurricane door leading to backyard...

Tool room and workshop space...

This is Tiger, one of the homes happy residents, wishing you a good day!
